Mentra Ventures’ mission is to uncover, invest in, and incubate the very best of the Welsh early-stage ecosystem, transforming Wales’ startup landscape on a scale never seen before.
We are aiming to support 100 rounds across the next four years into category defining businesses, nurturing the next generation of Welsh entrepreneurs.
Our ambition extends to catalysing University activity, helping commercialisation efforts, and fostering interconnectivity between Universites and investors, thereby creating more favourable conditions for entrepreneurs.
We are also seeking to improve the connectivity of investors and investees at each level in the region, learning from the success of well-established approaches in other regions.
For example, using Scotland as a standard of what Wales could aspire to be more like, there is a good, circular model of Pension Funds, Universities, Investors, Entrepreneurs and Supporters, doing roughly twice the number of deals per year.
However, Scotland’s key differentiator comes from the 10+ sources of capital from Pre-Seed to Series A, which dwarf’s Wales’ 2 main places for entrepreneurs to seek investment.
Complementary to our core strategy of deploying capital at Pre-Seed and Seed, we are interested in other ways to create outsized opportunities for growth in Wales as part of our 5 year plan.
We are currently exploring several ambitious proposals of how we could attract more talent and ideas to Wales at the early stage. Our goal is to create compounding network effects that accelerate Wales’ existing potential.
