Plantsea

Plantsea

(S)EIS I - Seed - 2026

PlantSea has built something the world’s largest detergent makers are looking for and had not yet found: a seaweed-derived, marine-safe, biodegradable polymer that performs like plastic and drops into existing film manufacturing without retooling.

Their validation runs deep. Paid pilots with some of the world’s largest home products companies, commercial partnerships to sell into the category, and a live trial with one of the UK’s largest packaging suppliers. The technology works how it needs to work for customers, where it needs to work for the industry and how it needs to work for the planet.

A rare, but good example of regulations making a market, from 2027, EU regulation ends PVOH’s “plastic-free” labelling, shift new materials in this space from a ESG story into a commercial necessity for the FMCG majors.

Founders Dr Rhiannon Rees and Dr Alex Newnes lead a team at an inflection point – moving production from something best measured in litres to something measured in tonnes across 2026 and 2027.

We believe PlantSea is one of a small number of companies globally positioned to reshape a type of packaging most people touch every day. We’re proud it is being built in Wales.

Mentra Ventures’ mission is to uncover, invest in, and incubate the very best of the Welsh early-stage ecosystem, transforming Wales’ startup landscape on a scale never seen before.

In investing our current fund and those after, we back category defining businesses, nurturing the next generation of Welsh entrepreneurs.
